Welcome to my Garden

Since first moving onto this four acres in 1991, I've tried to garden.
It's not easy. The soil is so sandy it will not hold water or nutrients for long.

There's a reason for the sandy soil. According to an article in the "Friends of the Lost Pines State Parks" newsletter, about 50 million years ago a shallow sea and a mountain range came together in this area. The sea dried up, the mountains wore away and we now have rolling hills and sand.

Add the drought for the last 6 years or so and the fact that our 4 acres get limited direct sun because of the tall pines and you can begin to see how frustrating it can get.

        Nevertheless, I keep trying.

Here are some pictures of my recent attempts.

        Bean Garden 4-4-03
The bean garden of 2003. Blue Lake Green Beans, Yellow Wax Beans and Lima Beans.
A few parsley seeds and some tomatoes for experimental purposes.
As of 5/9/03 we had enough mixed wax and green beans for one meal.
Also, a few tomatoes were setting.

I seem to have better luck with certain flowering plants.
Each year I buy one or more Amaryllis, let them bloom indoors, then plant them outdoors.
I've also collected some of the seeds and am growing a bunch of baby Amaryllis. It will be interesting to see what develops.

Here are three that have done well.
